the reasons why adidas sold its reebok subsidiary 😟

After 14 years, Adidas has finally decided to part ways with Reebok. According to CNBC News - the sale of the American subsidiary is set to be completed by the first Quarter of 2022

Founded in 1958 in Bolton, United Kingdom, the sporting goods company was no longer seems to be part of the German footwear giant´s strategy.

Called the “Own the Game”, this strategy formulation is aimed at enabling Adidas to significantly increase sales and profitability and gain market share by 2025.And after an evaluation of Reebok that took place during this strategy formulation in March 2021, adidas decided to focus its efforts on further strengthening the leading position of the adidas brand in the global sporting goods market. Explains Adidas on its website

Another reason has been the unattractiveness of the US brand in terms of sales figures and revenues and according to The New York Time when Adidas acquired Reebok in 2005, it hoped Reebok could recapture the glory of its 1980s heyday and create a formidable rival to Nike. But the brand got lost inside the broader Adidas empire and struggled to connect with consumers. Sales of Reebok fell 19 percent in 2020 to 1.41 billion euros, from 1.75 billion euros the year before.

For Kasper Rorsted CEO of Adidas , the German giant , will continue to focus its efforts on executing the “Own the Game” strategy that will enable the company grow in an attractive industry, gain market share, and create sustainable value for all of its stakeholders.
Finally, despite the fact that Reebok is a Boston( USA ) based Company, roughly 70% of its business is made outside The United States and canada.
